Set your master password

Last updated Oct 5, 2026

Your master password is the key to your encrypted vault — make it long and unique, because it can't be recovered without a recovery key.

Because your vault is encrypted with your master password and we never store it, we can't see or reset it. If you've set up a recovery key, you can use it to set a new one. Choosing a strong, memorable one matters.

  • When you create your account, it needs at least 12 characters, must reach Very strong on the strength meter, and must not appear in a known data breach. The same rule applies when you change it later or reset it with your recovery key. The easiest way to meet it is a passphrase of 6 random words: use Suggest a passphrase on the screen.
  • Never reuse it on another site or service.
  • Pick something you can remember without writing down, since you'll type it to unlock.

Important

If you forget your master password and haven't set up a recovery key, your encrypted data can't be recovered. Set up recovery early.
