Set up your recovery key

Last updated Oct 5, 2026

A recovery key lets you reset your master password if you forget it — it's shown once, so save it.

Because Secure Passwords is zero-knowledge, the recovery key is your way back in if you ever forget your master password. It's a generated key, shown to you only once.

  1. In the web vault, open Settings, then Account recovery.
  2. Select Set up recovery key.
  3. Save the key when it's revealed — use Copy all or Download as .txt, then select “I've saved this”. It won't be shown again.
  4. Confirm your master password (and a 2FA code, if 2FA is on) and select Save recovery key.

Tip

You can Regenerate the key later (the old key stops working), or Turn off the recovery key. Saving, regenerating, or turning off the key signs you out of other devices.

Important

Anyone with your recovery key plus your account email or username can reset your master password — store it as carefully as the password itself.
